Dominates the Second Round of the 2011 MaxAttack!™ Rally Series, Presented by the Danza del Sol Winery http://www.max-attack.com/node/207 <div class="field field-name-body field-type-text-with-summary two dozen other two-wheel-drive rally competitors to claim victory at the New England Forest Rally.

Portland, OR (July 28, 2011) – The second round of the 2011 MaxAttack! Series, presented by the Danza del Sol Winery, witnessed a dominating performance by local hero Chris Duplessis and co-driver Karl Atkinson as they took a comfortable victory in their new Ford Fiesta R2. The duo rarely put a wheel wrong all weekend. For the efforts, Duplessis and Atkinson received a $1500 prize and are now tied for the lead of the quest for the prestigious Max Attack! Championship and the Jake Himes Cup.

Runners-up Andrew Comrie-Picard and Jeremy Wimpey continue to develop their Scion XD, and their finish certainly vindicates the potential of their Scion. The team faced a litany of problems, however, as a cracked oil pan and a cracked downpipe limited their speed on some of the stages. The top three was completed by Dillon Van Way and Jake Blattner, in a Ford Fiesta. Also receiving prize money from the MaxAttack! series were Kevin Turner and Robert Sockalexis in a Subaru Impreza with their fourth-place finish, and the crowd-favorite Datsun 280Z of Greg Healey and Cindy Krolikowski, who finished in fifth.

Behind the top five, the rough stages took their toll on both finishers and non-finishers alike. Martin Walter and Ferd Trauttmansdorff were running a solid fourth-place for most of the rally in their Nissan 240SX, but two flat tires on Stage 8 cost them almost 15 minutes. Later in the rally they collapsed the right front strut, and spent the last stages picking their way around the biggest of the rocks and bumps. It was also a fraught weekend for the Honda Civic of Brian Gottlieb and Patrick Darrow. They broke their skid plate early on, and their crew lashed together a replacement composed of polyethylene cutting boards purchased at a local store. Later the team cracked the Honda's transmission case, and on the last stage center-punched a tree. They were able to limp to the end of the stage, and were flat-towed to the finish by good samaritans Walter and Trauttmansdorff.

The rough stages took their toll on a number of competitors, with dented skid plates and cracked oil pans being a common complaint, along with blown struts, bent wheels, and flat tires. Verena Mei and Keith Morison ended Verena's debut rally as a driver with a soft rollover at the Errol Super Special. Pre-event favorites Doug Shepherd and Karen Jankowski broke a strut early in the rally and were among the first victims, a rare DNF for their Dodge SRT-4. Wyatt Knox and Ole Holter, winners of the Washington MaxAttack! round, were forced out of the rally with an engine fire, while local favorites Mike White and George Loef blew the head gasket in their SAAB 900. Kristin Pryzybysz and Meghan Roy damaged a wheel bearing, and later retired when their Subaru overheated. The Greasecar VW Rabbit of Justin Carven and Geoff Clark was slowed first by a gearbox oil leak, then an electrical short.

The MaxAttack! Rally Series Presented by Danza del Sol consists of three events across the country, and each event features a $5,000 prize fund to be distributed among the top two-wheel-drive teams, as well as a season championship with the winners receiving coveted Jake Himes Cup. For more information about the MaxAttack! I'll post photos of the arrangement, as the machine is just too cool. As can happen with fresh engineering projects, the weak spots are surfacing and the car suffered a broken axle after landing the jump at Mexico. This sidelines them for MaxAttack!, but they'll try to get going to get some experience. We look forward to seeing them continue the development of their car and their rally experience! And I'll definitely post pics of that 'busa engine sitting between the fenders!

-It seems the Mexico jump is catching some others out this year, too. As usual, it's a tabletop type jump, but this year the landing ramp is rather sharp edged without a long run out...more like a motocross tabletop. This makes it very hard to try to “clear” the jump, as it would require the attitude of the car to be very nose down and the length of the leap to be judged perfectly. Hence most cars just go easy, jump up on top, and then roll off.

-One car that suffered a lot from the jump was the Ford Fiesta of William Petrow and Jeremy Neyhart. The team judged the length about right on the jump, but since the landing was so steep, the car came down with the rear hitting the top lip first and slamming the front into the ground hard. They broke the front subframe and messed up the skidplate on the first run of the stage. They removed the skidplate and threw it in the hatch for the second run, and then got to work welding up the front end when they got to service. They're back out on the stages now.

Events:

New England Forest Rally

Content Type:

Event Story

Fri, 15 Jul 2011 21:15:11 +0000 Ben 198 at http://www.max-attack.com http://www.max-attack.com/node/198#comments MaxAttack! He said that after the first few stage miles, Doug Shepherd, Chris Duplessis, Wyatt Knox, and himself were with a second or two of each other. He said he's really thirsting for this kind of competition.

-Speaking of Doug Shepherd, he and Karen Jankowski (both previous MaxAttack! Event/championship winners) are settling back into competition with the Dodge SRT-4. Doug says after 9 months of not driving it took a few turns into the first stage before the duck started paddling the water again, but now he feels he's up to speed, and he certainly looks it! Says the car has more torque than needed, and is running well.

-Chris Duplessis and Karl Atkinson are enjoying the ride in their new Ford Fiesta R2. Says Karl, they were taking no risks on the opening spectator stages, saving the push for the “big stages.” Still, the car looked very fast through Mexico and was beautifully navigated through the perfect line as we are used to seeing from Chris.

-Wyatt Knox and Ole Holter won the west coast round earlier this year at Washington, so they are in good shape with MaxAttack! Points toward the Jake Himes Cup, but they entered the MAZDASPEED3 in MaxAttack! In Maine anyway to try to earn a bit more MaxMoney. Wyatt said they had a slight spin on the first spectator stage at the bridge and lost a bit of time, but he's certain they'll be able to make it up.

-Dillon Van Way and Jake Blattner are piloting the turbocharged Ford Fiesta special and looked to have LOTS of power on tap in the little car. Dillon says the car continues to be developed and is really a potent weapon now. The car is very lightweight with lots of power. They opted for a Hewland S1600 gearbox due to the added torque of the turbo engine instead of the Sadev used in the R2 cars.

-Stay tuned...we have updates from ALL of our MaxAttackers. I'll be back with more updates in just a few!

Events:

New England Forest Rally

Content Type:

Event Story

Fri, 15 Jul 2011 21:10:58 +0000 Shenan 197 at http://www.max-attack.com http://www.max-attack.com/node/197#comments
